The handover month

June is where the school year ends and summer has not quite started, so it carries more overlapping plans than any other month and fewer fixed ones. The useful thing on a June page is seeing the last day of school and the first week of camp side by side. Print it, put it at eye level for the children, and let the whole family write on it. Report cards, yearbook signing, class parties and clearing out lockers all land in the same two weeks, so the last school row tends to need the most writing space.

Juneteenth and Father's Day

The English designs mark two days in June. Juneteenth on the 19th became a federal holiday in recent years, so banks and federal offices close, and when it falls on a weekend the day off moves to the nearest weekday. Father's Day falls on the third Sunday and changes date every year. The Father's Day calendar shows that Sunday on a page of its own if you need it for a card or a family plan. Flag Day on the 14th is not printed, because it is not a day off.

How do I plan summer camps on a June calendar?

Write each child's camp weeks as one bar across the rows, using a different colour per child. Add drop-off and pick-up times in the squares where they change. Leave the gaps between camps blank on purpose, because those are the weeks that need child care, grandparents or time off work.

Solstice, summer hours and the two-month view

The summer solstice arrives around the 21st, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Many offices switch to summer hours, which shifts pick-ups and meetings, so June is a good month to write work hours into the grid. Because camps and trips often cross from June into July, a two-month calendar keeps both months in view on one sheet.
