How the moon phases work
The moon takes 29.53 days on average to go from one new moon to the next, a period called the synodic month or lunation. Along the way it passes through four principal phases: new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter, roughly a week apart. Because twelve lunations add up to about 354 days, the phases drift through the calendar from year to year, and a single month can even hold the same phase twice.
Two full moons in May, and a total eclipse in August
2026 packs 13 full moons into 12 months. May opens with a full moon on May 1 and closes with a second one on May 31, popularly called a blue moon. On March 3 the full moon slides through Earth's shadow in a total lunar eclipse, and the new moon of August 12 brings a total solar eclipse.
