October fills up quietly
October looks manageable on the first of the month and is full by the fifteenth. Fall sports, school events and the first round of parent-teacher conferences all sit in it, and none of them announce themselves early. Print the page soon and mark the school dates before anything else goes on, since that is the block everything else has to fit around. Homecoming, fall picture day and pumpkin patch trips are typical October entries, and fall sports often reach the playoffs late in the month, which can change weekend plans at short notice.
Columbus Day and Halloween
The English designs mark two dates this month. Columbus Day falls on the second Monday, and many places also observe it as Indigenous Peoples' Day. Banks and federal offices close, while plenty of schools stay open, so check your district before planning a day out. Halloween closes the month on the 31st, and school costume parades and trunk-or-treat events are often held in the days before it. The Halloween calendar puts the 31st on a themed page for a classroom door.
Why is October a good month to start holiday planning?
The end-of-year season starts to book up in October. Flights for Thanksgiving and December tend to cost more as the dates approach, and many workplaces ask for holiday time-off requests now. Writing those deadlines on the October page gives you about six weeks of notice before November gets busy.
The end of the first grading period
In many schools the first quarter ends in October, followed by report cards and conferences. Mark the end of the quarter and your conference slot, and keep a note for any forms to return. The quarterly calendar helps if you track school or work by quarter, and the list of holiday calendars shows what is coming next. Open enrollment for workplace benefits often runs from late October into November, so a reminder near the end of the month is worth adding. In Europe the clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, usually a week before the United States, so calls with colleagues there shift by an hour for that week.
