A fresh grid after the holidays

January is the month most people hang a new calendar, and also the month most of them give up on it. The pages that last are the light ones. Block out the two or three things that come back every week, like swim lessons or the recycling pickup, and leave the other squares open. Print it on the first weekend, tape it near the coffee maker and write in pencil. A January page that still has white space on the 20th will make it to February. If several people share the page, give each one a pen colour on the first day. By the third week you can see at a glance whose evenings are already taken, which is usually what decides whether a new plan fits.

New Year's Day, MLK Day and the second semester

The English PDFs mark two federal holidays this month: New Year's Day on the 1st and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday. MLK Day moves every year, so circle it before you book anything for that long weekend. For families, January also means school starting back after winter break, and in many districts the second semester begins mid-month with new class schedules. Paperwork and resolutions

Tax paperwork starts to trickle in now. Employers have until the end of January to send out W-2 forms, so a note in the last row reminds you to watch the mailbox and start a folder. Resolutions belong to this month too.
